Navigation systems for refit projects

After delivery, Anschütz remains the partner in navigation for our customers and the crew aboard, through the lifetime of the ship. When it comes to updates and upgrades of the functionalities, the modernization of individual system components or a refit of the entire bridge, a skilled and experienced refit team takes care of the whole process, from first consultancy to a qualified price offer, and from a first survey to project planning and completion.

Long experience

We have gained a refit expertise, collected over many years from experiences in upgrades, updates and replacements of navigation and bridge equipment from various generations and makers. Thanks to our modular system architecture and backward compatible products, our retrofit solutions allow replacing virtually any existing systems on board.

High competence

We keep refits simple through precise planning and lean processes. Our specialized refit team works closely with the customer and other partners, identifies operational needs and class requirements, and makes sure that any questions or tasks that come up are handled answered quickly.

Trust in expertise

Our experienced refit specialists start with an dedicated analysis of the existing system, taking into consideration peripherals, interfaces or cabling aboard, and available installation space. From the definition of the new system layout it goes to ordering equipment, handling class approvals, and taking care of factory acceptance tests and documentation, until commissioning and sea trials.

Typical work steps are:

  • Identification of the customer’s operational needs and class requirements
  • Analysis of the existing system aboard, taking into consideration existing documentation about the systems, peripherals, interfaces or cabling aboard, and even available installation space in the bridge consoles
  • Definition of the new equipment and the system layout (technical diagrams)
  • Ordering equipment from stock, handling of required class approvals, factory acceptance test and documentation
  • Commissioning of new equipment and sea trials

Like a pit stop: upgrade bridge systems

- Retrofitting older bridge systems support safe navigation -

When you step on the bridge of a 10-to-15-year-old vessel and look at the navigation equipment, you often will see many single units connected by multiple cables and interfaces.

Navigators on these bridges need to monitor, analyze and operate a lot of inconsistent data and unnecessary alarms. The single units and interfaces on the bridge unnecessarily cause unclear data distribution, hamper safe decision-making and increase the level of stress.

To overcome these issues, Anschütz introduces Synapsis NX, a new generation of integrated navigation systems. This system serves as the central interface between the human user and the technology. It offers improvement in safety and a more-efficient operation. Ship owners can upgrade to the new technology by retrofitting the old bridge system during regular docking.

“Our experience with the new Synapsis NX system is extremely positive,” said Captain Steve Wall of the U.S.-based ship owner Polar Tankers. “We value the intuitive user interfaces, the functionality as well as the clearness of information provided by the system, empowering our crews to focus on safe navigation without distraction.”

Synapsis NX offers transparent interfacing and central collection and monitoring of sensor data. Consistent distribution and designation of information support a clear situational picture across the system. Intelligent alert management eliminates unnecessary alarms, allowing the crew to concentrate on relevant tasks.

Anschütz will complete the retrofit for five ships of Polar Tankers in October 2020. The Polar Tankers operate alongside the U.S. West Coast between California, Hawaii and Alaska, and are therefore subject to stringent environmental and safety regulations. They are among the most modern tankers in the world.
